Mercury Control in North America using Powdered Activated Carbon

Internationally, many countries are looking at mercury emissions limits that address the global mercury issue. Good measurements, models, and understanding of control technologies are all part of the solution as regions grapple with setting appropriate limits on facilities that are attainable and affordable.

At the International Energy Agency’s 12th annual Mercury Emissions from Coal (MEC12) meeting in February-March, many presenters from all over the world provided great insights into current thinking and work being done to quantify and control emissions of mercury.

Startup Under MATS: Implementation Lessons Learned

Mercury Control in Baghouse Applications

ADA Carbon Solutions collaborated with Southern Company and EPRI to design PAC products optimized to perform well in a TOXECON baghouse application where high sulfur fuel is burned.  The challenge, in this case, is to optimize mercury capture in the presence of high SO3 which is known to impair PAC performance while minimizing the pressure drop in a situation where PAC represents up to 90+% of the fly ash.

Through the collaboration, PAC properties were modified to achieve the objectives.  In this first phase of work, compliance was achieved with next-generation ADA Carbon Solution PACs with modified particle morphology and surface chemistry that reduced pressure drop by 30% from traditional PAC products.  The next phase of work will introduce PAC SO3 tolerant mechanisms to further enhance baghouse performance.

Managing Byproduct Impacts for MATS

This paper demonstrates the possibilities for utilization of ash in concrete in post-MATS compliance scenarios. A new test is introduced to monitor ash quality, and then is applied to real-world utility ash and PAC ranges to show the impacts. We produce basic guidelines for ash management and specific options to continue ash sales post-MATS. The work was completed by ADA Carbon Solutions, Headwaters Resources, and Kline Consulting.

Dynamic Mercury Capture Test

ADA Carbon Solutions has implemented a new tool to advance the accuracy and relevance of Powdered Activated Carbon (PAC) laboratory screening. The results are excellent for a higher level of batch quality control, accurate comparisons between sorbents, and more-realistic simulation of full-scale injection environments.

This tool enables us to rapidly prototype new sorbents, and scale up the results more quickly, both minimizing field issues and reducing the time to solve field problems. We introduced the Dynamic Mercury Capture Test to the industry at the EUEC in conjunction with Dr. Nick Lentz of University of North Dakota.

Dynamic Mercury Index Test

One of the shortfalls in mercury control research was the development of a good surrogate for mercury capture in dynamic conditions, representative of ESP in-flight capture. Our Dynamic Mercury Index (DMI) test is our answer to this absence. The laboratory-based test mimics real in-duct injection mechanically, and has proven to be an excellent directional indicator for new product development and prototyping.

It distinguishes well between the performance of different sorbents such that it is also a reliable and useful Quality Assurance (QA) tool. Comparisons to full-scale field injection tests have shown that the DMI is an excellent tool for both product development and QA. ESP Optimization

ESPs require a PAC that is fast-responding and easily collected.  Our FastPAC series is optimized for ESP applications in terms of its rapid mercury capture time and steep capture curves.  The low residence time, often under 1 second, for PAC to do its mercury control job, provides a challenge that our FastPAC can meet.

Recent studies, described in our presentation, have shown that improvements to the PAC have resulted in lower resistivity and particle collection enhancements. These crucial characteristics make our newest FastPAC series a reliable option for MATS compliance in ESP systems.
